Abstract
The prevalence of obesity continues to rise globally, leading to an increase in bariatric surgeries such as sleeve gastrectomy. Hiatal hernias are common in obese patients and may require concurrent repair during bariatric procedures. This observational study examines the outcomes of hiatal hernia repair performed alongside gastric sleeve surgery in Clearwater, FL. Data were collected from patients undergoing these procedures, focusing on surgical success, Hiatal Hernia Repair After Gastric Sleeve In Clearwater FL complication rates, and Hiatal Hernia Repair After Gastric Sleeve In Clearwater FL postoperative quality of life.
Introduction
Obesity is a significant public health concern, often leading to comorbid conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernias. Sleeve gastrectomy has become a popular surgical intervention for weight loss, frequently accompanied by the need to address hiatal hernias. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of simultaneous Hiatal Hernia Repair After Gastric Sleeve In Clearwater FL hernia repair during gastric sleeve surgery, providing insights into the efficacy and safety of this combined approach.
Methods
This observational study was conducted at a leading bariatric center in Clearwater, FL, from January 2020 to December 2022. Patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy with concurrent hiatal hernia repair were included. Preoperative assessments included body mass index (BMI), presence of GERD symptoms, and diagnostic imaging to confirm hiatal hernia. Surgical techniques, postoperative complications, and patient-reported outcomes were analyzed.
Results
Patient Demographics
A total of 150 patients underwent gastric sleeve surgery with concurrent hiatal hernia repair. The cohort consisted of 65% females and 35% males, with a mean age of 42 years (range 25-65). The mean preoperative BMI was 42 kg/m².
Surgical Outcomes

The majority of patients (90%) experienced no intraoperative complications. The most common surgical technique involved laparoscopic repair with mesh reinforcement for larger hernias.

The low complication rates and high patient satisfaction underscore the benefits of addressing both weight loss and GERD symptoms concurrently. These results align with existing literature advocating for the combined surgical approach.
Conclusion
Hiatal hernia repair during gastric sleeve surgery in Clearwater, FL, demonstrates favorable outcomes, with minimal complications and significant improvement in quality of life. This study supports the integration of hernia repair in bariatric procedures for comprehensive patient care. Further research with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up is recommended to validate these findings.
