Red Dead Online _ is, well, something to behold. While there are elements in there that _could make this game the best online gaming experience yet, Rockstar has been slow in implementing helpful features and doing something about the insane amount of griefers that populate their western world. Nothing is more frustrating than fishing for an hour so you can get your gold and honor up, only to have some neckbeard camper wait until you reach the butcher to kill you or steal your wares. It makes the act of actually progressing in the story mode online somewhat impossible, and for people not looking for PVP gameplay, it makes for an all but unplayable and trying game experie
What makes the journal even more beautiful is the fact that it records your moments in-game and weaves them into the life of Arthur. I may not be able to make Arthur loyal to Dutch in the end or have him be pals with Micah, but I can decide what side activities he partakes in or the animals he hunts. It gives what I do in-game life. The journal becomes my version of Arthur’s final days, giving my playtime a personal, lively touch that I’ve never experienced in a game before: Arthur’s story and mine intertwine.
This meta-acknowledgement that Arthur is, after all, just a video game character for the player to control is also a signal that Arthur desires a different life. In his journal , Arthur writes about the conflict of good and evil within him, and envies how easy it seems to be for others, like Charles, to be good. However, the Arthur who exists in those small conversations and in the journal is a separate entity from the one in the game that you control. That Arthur won't help strangers without the promise of payment. Main missions continually task you with destroying others for your own potential benefit. Arthur will sometimes offer limp verbal disagreement to the actions and decisions of the gang, but it is not until late in Chapter 5 that he actually begins to actively pursue altruism: helping others simply for the sake of it.
